Satyalok and Rishidesh

Our old Hindu scriptures honor our nation as Satyalok and Rishidesh. Etimologically word Lok means world and Satya means truth. In the same way, Ri also signifies truth. Rishis were Sages who exclusively spoke the truth. Desh refers to a nation. That is the reason ancient India was referred to as Rishidesh. And individuals also communicated the truth, which is why ancient India was referred to as Satyalok

Satyameva Jayate

Satyameva jayate nanritam,

Satyena pantha vitato devayanah.

Yenakramantyrishayo hyaptakama

Yatra tat satyasya paramam nidhanam

  • verse 3.1.6, Mundaka Upanishad,

Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood.

Through truth the divine path is spread out,

By which the sages, with desires fulfilled,

Ascend to where that supreme treasure of Truth resides.

We Indians take pride in adopting the hymn of Satyameva Jayate as our National motto. Which, in fact, was adopted from the Mundaka Upanishad. “Satyameva Jayate” meaning Truth Prevails ultimately, or Truth only triumphs always.

Ancient foreign authors and contemporary observers praised Indians for their honesty. Here are a few citations from the works of foreign authors.

STRABO

Indians are so trustworthy that they don’t need locks on their doors or written agreements to ensure commitment. – STRABO (63 BCE-24 CE).

MARCO POLO

The Indians are countless, resembling grains of sand untainted by dishonesty and aggression. They do not dread either death or life.

You should realize that Indians are the finest traders globally and the most honest,as they would never tell a lie for anything at all. – MARCO POLO (1254-1295 ACE)

ABUL FAZAL

Hindus hold a deep respect for Truth and exhibit unwavering loyalty in all their interactions. – ABUL FAZAL (1551-1602 ACE)

MAX MULLER

The affection for truth captivated all the nations that encountered India, standing out as a key trait in the national character of its people. – MAX MULLER (1823-1900 ACE)

Unlike other world religions, Hinduism is not based on one definitive religious scripture. It is not governed by any clergy from a Religious Congress. The evolution of Indian society has occurred over millennia. There are no strict principles for following the Hindu Religion. Manu Smriti states that laws should adapt based on Desa (country), Kalamana (time and period), and Paristhiti (circumstances). Certainly Humane, of course. This captures the core of Indian Religion. It relies on the tenets of Achara Paramo DharmaH (which means: The customs of a specific community should take precedence over universal Dharma guidelines.)
