The hymn, Akshibhyam te sukta, can be found in the Atharvana Veda. This is genuinely a chant for curing illnesses. It suggests that chanting Vedic suktas may aid in curing one’s diseases. However, Hindu Vedic dharma does not advocate for dogmatism. It outlines practices for the treatment of illnesses and afflictions. However, it does not suggest that one should forgo medications and exclusively depend on chanting mantras for curing ailments. Examine this verse:
यावत्कंठ गताः प्राणाः यावन्नश्यति चॆंद्रियं
तावच्चिकत्सा कर्तव्या कालस्य कुटिला गतिः
yAvatkaMTh gatAH prANAH yAvannaSyati cEMdriyaM
tAvaccikatsA kartavyA kAlasy kuTilA gatiH
Meaning: Who can say what the desire of the Almighty God is? And who can predict the destiny of this patient, which hinges on his previous karmas (consequences of past sins and virtuous actions)? We must do everything possible to preserve a patient’s life by providing appropriate medications as long as their organs are functioning. As long as he remains alive.
There exists a significant bias among the educated in India regarding the contents of the Atharvana Veda. Many believe that the Atharvana Veda instructs on occult methods and recommends amulets and charms for healing ailments. However, the reality is distinct. I have gone through this Ved multiple times. I discovered nothing of that kind. Indeed, there exist slokas or hymns that can be recited to appease the Gods for the resolution of human issues and the healing of ailments. However, the same Ved specifies medications for particular ailments. Esteemed Ayurvedic Doctors – Charvaka and Sushruta both said that they have gained significant knowledge from the Atharvana Veda.
